According to the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (Meti), Japanese Minister of Trade Hagi Koichi has asked the United States to exempt Japan's Article 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. This is after the recently signed U.S.-Europe trade agreement.

The government said on Sunday that U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimundo will visit Japan, Singapore and Malaysia on November 15 to reaffirm U.S. commitments and strengthen economic ties with allies and key partners. On the same day, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai will arrive in Tokyo.

Two US officials are expected to discuss with Japanese officials the possible review of a 25% tariff on US steel imports and a 10% tariff on aluminum imports. Kallanish pointed out that these are the so-called Section 232 tariffs introduced by the administration of former US President Donald Trump.

Hagiuda said these measures are having devastating effects, and he has asked the United States to take action. The Japan Iron and Steel Union stated on November 2 that the recent agreement between the United States and the European Union would lead to a comprehensive relaxation of EU steel tariff-free quota measures. He pointed out that Japan's steel industry is an ally of the United States and will lag behind the European Union in terms of export competitiveness to the United States.
